The MOSES rocket payload, built by MSU students, had its first flight on February 8, 2006.
MOSES is a cutting-edge instrument for simultaneous imaging and spectroscopy of the solar atmosphere in EUV. The first flight gathered data that show small (Earth-sized!) explosive events in the solar atmosphere, such as the one shown in this movie.
The student will gain hands-on experience with the optics flown in February 2006, using a variety of experimental techniques. The exact scope of the project will depend upon the interests and abilities of the student. Relevant capabilities of our Space Optics and Space Environment laboratories include optical testing, interferometry, cleanrooms, high vacuum, generation and detection of EUV radiation.
Because this project involves access to flight hardware, we seek applicants who have demonstrated responsibility and attention to detail. A solid grasp of basic physics, writing skills, and mechanical inclination are required. Optics or machine shop experience will be advantageous. Your application should describe any previous laboratory experience.
