Ultraviolet instruments for observing the Sun from space

The student will gain hands-on experience with one or more ultraviolet imaging spectrometers designed for observing the Sun from space. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about optical instrument design and optical testing. The exact scope of the project will depend upon the interests and abilities of the student.

The instruments: The MOSES rocket payload, built by MSU students, had its first flight on February 8, 2006. MOSES is a cutting-edge instrument for simultaneous imaging and spectroscopy of the solar atmosphere in EUV. The first flight gathered data that show small (Earth-sized!) explosive events in the solar atmosphere, such as the one shown in this movie. IRIS is a proposed mission for which MSU recently developed a prototype spectrometer. By the time summer rolls around, we will know whether IRIS has been selected for flight as a NASA Small Explorer.

Qualifications: We seek applicants who have demonstrated responsibility and attention to detail. A solid grasp of basic physics, writing skills, and mechanical inclination are required. Optics or machine shop experience will be advantageous. Your application should describe any previous laboratory experience.
