My project is to begin looking at science data from HRBE (aka Explorer-1 [Prime] (E1P)), Montana State University's first satellite in orbit. Its science payload is designed to count charged particles (mainly electrons with energies > ~50 keV) and it is a reflight of the Explorer-1 mission which discovered the Van Allen Radiation Belts. What we are hoping to see emerge from E1P's data is that E1P responded as would be expected to changes in magnetic activity, and that E1P viewed similar charged particle flux to NOAA satellites when E1P and a specific NOAA satellite were flying close to each other.
A good place to start understanding E1P's mission is with information about the Van Allen Radiation Belts, which are not well understood. Since one of the goals of E1P (Explorer-1 Prime aka HRBE [Hiskock Radiation Belt Explorer]) is to demonstrate the capacity for Cubesats and other Small Sats to predict and study space weather, these pages will be useful. E1P should observe changes in space weather due to fluctations in the solar wind and other solar activity, such as coronal mass ejections.
