Hello, I'm Letisha McLaughlin, a graduate from the physics program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and a soon to be graduate student at North Carolina State University. Currently I am participating in Montana State University's REU program, or Reasearch Experience for Undergraduates. Specifically, I am working with Dr. David McKenzie and his team to explore a phenomenon called SADs, or Supra-arcade Downflows. An example of the focus of my summer research project can be seen here. This is a flare resulting in a coronal mass ejection that occured on April 21, 2002. After the formation of the arcade, an arcade fan had formed above the plasma loops. It is here you can see the SADs which appear like dark 'tadpoles' accelerating towards the sun. The most dramatic of these occur in the southern region of this example flare. |
