Examples of time series integration

Taipei 101 Elevator

The error plots seem to be smoother with each integration. Why is that?

Cumulative Error

The elevator example brings up the question of cumulative error, as the velocity and position integrals gradually wander off course. How fast does the error grow, and would it help to sample more frequently?

Integral Filter

If we know that the integrand fluctuates about a mean of zero, then we can take advantage of that information to prevent the buildup of cumulative error.

Stage 2 Tailoff Anomaly

Acceleration data from an attitude control system anomaly as a second-stage rocket motor was burning out. The data and sound file were graciously provided by Tom Irvine. Visit his excellent website on vibration and acoustics.

Data and programs

Plots of the whole timespan (t = 124-132 s)

Plots of the anomaly onset (t = 124-125 s)

Plots of fully developed weirdness (t = 125.0-125.1 s)
