Questions regarding the paper by Axford and McKenzie. Note: These are not assigments, just items to ponder while reading the papers, and issues to discuss in the class. Don't feel inadequate if you cannot answer them on your own! There are some real gaps in either the presentation of or the physics used by the authors, which I address in the first two questions. 1. One aspect of particle interaction is completely swept under the rug? What is it? What extra terms in what equations would be needed, you guess? 2. An important loss term is left out of the energy equation. What is it? 3. How does the Axford-McKenzie model account for the rapid proton heating at the base of the wind? How does that relate to the rapid acceleration of the wind near the base? 4. What are the arguments presented in favor of ion-cyclotron wave heating? What is the physical evidence for such waves?
