Of remembrance, a quiet lea.
A place we knew, a summer's lane
Where once we strayed.
Its
borders dappled with yarrow, willowherb
And the shade of a slumberous Oak.
Dreamquiet in the noonday heat...
For
did we not declare with fervour meet,
Heaven is now, is with us
In this very place?...
The
remembering brush paints unmoving clouds,
Like gypsy lace.
And a leaning sign post, pointing uncertainly
Along the green and rutted lane
That curves away...
Past
Barley fields
Where Skylarks sing their joys awhile;
Past farmhouse and cottage white,
Hedge and foot-worn stile.
Following
some ancient course
From shire to shire.
And fading into a distant peace,
Perfect and entire...”
