June 18 to June 20
Dr. Longcope gave a lecture on the sun’s atmosphere and showed pictures of SDO – AIA data. It was interesting to see this and learn the reasons behind using some of the filters, such as SDO – AIA 193 for flares, since I had used the data last year but didn’t know why each filter was good for a specific sun event.
I finally finished working through the errors from the RHESSI GUI for 5 flares. I had emailed Dr. Qiu about the errors, and she responded saying that 2 of the flares should be ignored but that the other 3 should work. I worked on getting a good number of counts and trying to use parameters that would process the images better.

I met with Dr. Qiu twice today. During the first meeting Dr. Qiu looked over the images I processed in the RHESSI GUI and talked about possibly changing the energy band for the higher energy flares as well as trying to use a different filter for some of the better images. In addition, I need to clean up some of the images since their quicklooks images from the RHESSI browser look better than mine. For others, my images look a tiny bit better than the RHESSI quicklooks ones and Dr. Qiu said they should be fine. Then we went over my project in greater detail and discussed the project timeline. For the second meeting Dr. Qiu gave Michael and me more information on magnetic reconnection and how it relates to each of our projects.
I spent the rest of the day cleaning up the excel sheet and figuring out how to best clean up the images that Dr. Qiu recommended.
June 22
I chose 9 different events to clean up. This involved trying different energy bands if they were larger flares or using the 3F filter if the images were very clear using the 4F filter. I did keep everything using the clean filter, however. I re-processed 5 of the shorter events today, with the intention of doing the next 4 events on Monday.
Weekend
On Wednesday, I saw Love's, Labor's, Lost with Jada and Nicole. It was extremely funny and a nice change from seeing Othello last week.
Friday night I went on a walk along the Main Street to Mountain trail and ended up on Peet's Hill trail. It was so beautiful, and a fun walk. There were also so many cute dogs. When my mom visits I am definitely taking her there!
On Saturday, Nicole, Clare, and I got brunch in the morning at Cat's Eye. It was so cute and cat-themed (they even played cat themed music!). That afternoon it started pouring. When it cleared up, Nicole and I decided to attempt the hike to the M. It started raining as soon as the uber dropped us off at the trailhead but we decided to go up the steep way and down the easy way to avoid slipping. At the top the clouds parted and the sun came out. You could also see the clouds rolling through the valley. It made me realize how far up we had hiked. Then, on the way down, it felt rather steep even though it was supposed to be easy. When we got to the bottom we realized we had gone the "strenuous hike" route by accident. After that, Courtney met up with us and we got sushi at Seven Sushi.
Then it was Sunday! Nicole, Courtney, Michael, Jada, and I went to Hyalite Park. It was surprisingly close to Roskie. We parked at the reservoir and hiked to Cresent Lake. After that we went to Palisade Falls, which was a surprisingly nice walk with a beautiful waterfall at the end. Afterwards, we went to Olive Gardena and I had the black tie mousse cake which was probably the best cake I've ever had in a while. I would totally recommend the cake.
