OBJECTIVE: Learn about SOHO/SUMER instruments / Download data from the virutalsolar / Read data with IDL

REPORT: Sooo...SOHO is the satellite and SUMER is one of the many instruments onboard - a kind of UV spectrometer. I started using virtualsolar.org to obtain data on C IV and Ne VII emission lines. The Virtual Solar Observatory is a repository of data products from major satellite missions where you can search by instrument, date, spectral range, etc. For our project, the data products needed are slit scans done of the entire sun on varying dates in 1996. I started plotting individual scans as well as their radiance. The ultimate goal is to take all these individual "slices" and arrange them so you end up with a full-disk image of the sun.

CAPTION: CIV slit data - above is individual slit scans of CIV as well as a line profile corresponding to the data to the left where x axes is the wavelength in angstroms and the y axis is W/str/m^2/Angstrom. With these individual slit scans we can construct a full disk image of the sun by creating a 3D data cube in IDL
