Mix O' images

Images of the Sun all taken at the same time on 8 May 1992. Clockwise from the top-left: Wide band visible light image (sometimes called white light image), H-alpha image formed by taking an photo in a very narrow wavelength band of visible red light, a soft x-ray image from SXT-Yohkoh, and a magnetogram which was obtained by composite photos in a very narrow wavelength band of visible green light.
The differences between these images are striking. The white light image shows a face of the that we are most familiar with; a bright disk that has a clear edge with its dark surroundings. Whereas the soft x-ray image shows the surrounding area as bright and the "disk" of the Sun appears to be black in some places and bright in others.
