cat {FileName}

Prints out ( to the screen ) the contents of the named file. You can not see non-text file with this command.



cd {DirName}

Change current directory. Without a "DirName", it will return you to your home directory. Otherwise, it takes you to the directory named.



cp {filename(s)} {path}

Copies files from one directory/filename to another. "cp f1 f2" makes a file "f2" identical to "f1". "cp *.c src/" copies all files that end in ".c" into the "src" directory.



exit

Exits and Disconnects your network connection. You can also use "logout".



emacs {filename}

Text editor. If filename is present, it will start editing that file. Type "-x -s" to save the editing file. Type "-x -c" to exit from emacs.



ftp {address}

"ftp" transfers files to and from a remote network site. After connecting, "ls" will print out the files in the current directory, and "get filename"/"put filename" will transfer the named file into/from your local directory. Be sure to type "binary" before transferring non-ascii ( executable, compressed, archived, etc ) files. To exit "ftp" session type "bye". There are many ftp-sites that will let you log in as "anonymous".

lpr {filename}

Queues file "filename" to be printed on "printer". See the local information about our printers.



ls {directory}

Shows directory listing. If no "directory" is specified, "ls" prints the names of the files in the current directory. Type "ls -l" to get more information about the files and directories.



mail {mail address}

Send/Read e-mail messages. If no "login-name" is specified, "mail" checks to see if you have any mail in your mail box. You can find many other useful tools to read/send e-mails. Many users in our system seem to use "pine".



man {command name}

Shows the full manual page entry for "command name". Please try "man man" for details.



mkdir {directory}

Create a directory.



more {filename}

less {filename}

Displays the contents of a file with pagebreaks. "less" is more powerful than "more".



mv {filename} {path}

mv {filename1} {filename2}

Moves "filename" to "path" or Renames "filename1" to "filename2".



pwd

Shows current working directory path.



rm {filename(s)}

Removes files.



rmdir {directory}

Remove directories.



ssh {address}

Login securely to remote machine.



tar xf {TAR filename}

tar cf {TAR filename} {filenames}

Extract/Store files from/into an archive file. You may need to use this command, because some of the scientific data are distributed with TAR archive formats.



vi {filename}

Screen oriented text editor. I (KY) always use this to write programs. But, I guess, you will prefer "emacs" or other ones.



yppasswd

Interactively changes your password.
