Presentation Title: An intense long-duration confined flare observed by Hinode, IRIS, and SDO

Abstract:

We present observations of an intense and long-duration but confined flare that occurred on the southwest solar limb. The event was simultaneously observed by the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), the X-ray Telescope (XRT) on Hinode, and the Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS). A prominence rises up at the onset of the flare, but finally fails to escape from the Sun with plenty of material falling back. A magnetic flux rope structure that rises together with the prominence contains high-temperature plasma as is evident in XRT and AIA hot channel images. Hot post-flare loops, evidenced in AIA, XRT, and IRIS SJI images, form in the wake of the rising flux rope, similar to the scenario of standard eruptive flares. IRIS detects strong Fe XXI emissions with excess line broadenings from the low-lying flare loops. Additionally, some less bright, high-lying loops appear above the prominence and flux rope, which become more prominent after the flare peak and are visible for more than 4 hours during the long-duration gradual phase. In the context of a multi-polar magnetic configuration in the active region, our results suggest a failed magnetic-breakout eruption that produces an intense long-duration flare.
