Presentation Title: Acceleration of Non-Thermal Electrons in Solar Flares
Author(s): Jeongbhin Seo, Fan Guo, and Xiaocan Li

Abstract:

During the impulsive phase of a solar flare, notable emissions include strong hard X-rays, as well as intense UV and white-light emissions. However, traditional studies encounter what is known as the 'number problem' that a discrepancy between the high count of non-thermal electrons required to explain energy deposition in solar flares and the lower observed numbers in the solar corona. Our study aims to comprehend the generation and role of non-thermal particles through numerical simulations. We have developed a new method for MHD, including feedback from non-thermal particles, to better understand generation and transport of non-thermal electrons in flares. In this talk, we will discuss our recent results, demonstrating that non-thermal energetic particles are generated through magnetic reconnection, and we will present the distribution and energy budget of the non-thermal electrons above the looptop, which are related to the hard X-ray emission.
