Abstract:

Elemental abundances provide a unique tracer of the origin of plasma in the solar atmosphere, with a particular dependence on the first ionisation potential (FIP) of elements. Low-FIP elements often show enhanced abundances in the corona in active regions and slow solar wind source regions - a phenomenon known as the FIP effect. Current theories suggest that fractionation of elements occurs in the upper chromosphere/transition region, with composition signatures “frozen” into corona. However, composition variability across atmospheric layers is poorly understood, and has never before been observed. We present results linking, for the first time, spatially resolved composition measurements from Hinode/EIS and Solar Orbiter/SPICE. Utilising the March 2023 composition mosaic SOOP that scans a big area of the solar disk, we track abundance variations of elements with across the chromosphere to the corona in different solar structures.
