Abstract:

High-temperature plasma upflows at the edges of active regions (AR outflows) have often been invoked as a candidate source of mass and energy to the slow solar wind (SW). AR outflows have been studied in detail since the launch of Hinode/EIS, and interchange reconnection in the corona between closed and open magnetic field loops has been suggested as a possible candidate mechanism to explain AR outflows and their connection to the solar wind. A key signature of interchange reconnection is the detection of type III bursts in radio data. Using IRIS observations, recent work has also revealed the presence of peculiar spectral signatures in the chromosphere and transition region underneath the AR outflows, which are not seen elsewhere in the AR. The underlying physical cause for these unique signatures is still unclear, but these results suggest that the corona and lower atmosphere are not separate environments and must be studied together. In this work we present a follow up study combining different ARs observed by EIS and IRIS in the ultraviolet and VLA in radio wavelenghts. Using these multi-wavelength observations, we investigate the response of the plasma throughout different layers of the atmosphere from chromosphere to corona, and compare our results with predictions from theoretical models.
