I hope you are all getting excited about Loops V next summer!  Below is a description of one of the sessions of the workshop.  In this session, we will attempt to come to a consensus on the predictions of different models and how they relate to observations.  I hope you choose to participate.  See you in Spain!

In the Loop V workshop next summer, there will be a session on relating the predictions of coronal heating models to solar observations.  The key to discriminating between the different heating models is to identify distinguishing observables and then make those observations.  For instance, both effectively steady and nanoflare heating models can produce quasi-steady intensities.  Observing quasi-steady intensities, then, does not help us determine which heating scenario is most likely.  Models may, however, predict different velocities or different emission measure distributions.  
 
The goal of this session of the loops workshop is to develop a comprehensive table of observables for different heating models.  An example of such a table is on the Loops V website.  This is just a first stab at what the table may look like, we need input from the different modelers in the community to complete and revise this table.  

If you are modeling coronal loops, please consider simulating these different observables (intensity as a function of time, density, velocity at the footpoints, expected non-thermal velocities, differential emission measure and any additional observable that you believe could act a discriminator) for your chosen heating scenario.  If you are not planning to submit a talk about your model that would fit into this session, please consider making a single slide that can be shown during the discussion session.  
 
If you are observing coronal loops, you aren’t off the hook!  It will be just as important to compile a similar list of observables for different coronal structures and some estimate of the uncertainty in the observation.  For instance, what is the shape of the DEM that is measured in the core loops as opposed to the EUV loops or fans?  What are the observed velocities in these structures?  
 
At the end of the Loops V workshop, hopefully we will have come to a consensus on the relationship between various heating scenarios and observables.  We hope to publish our combined results (i.e., the table) with all contributors as co-authors.
