SCOSTEP Observing and Modeling Campaign On Space Weather Events (SOMCOSE) Active region NOAA 1429 is returning on the east limb of the Sun. This region produced one of the two biggest space weather events of solar cycle 24. An observing campaign known as SCOSTEP Observing and Modeling Campaign On Space Weather Events (SOMCOSE) has been initiated to track this region for a month, starting March 29, 2012. Observations made during its previous disk passage also will be used for further studies. The campaign is conducted under the aegis of the Scientific Committee on Solar Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP, see www.yorku.ca/scostephttp://www.yorku.ca/scostep). The campaign is to observe, track, model and analyze the space weather impacts of all the solar events that happen during the interval. Observations can start right away. RHESSI, SOHO, STEREO, SDO, Wind, ACE, TIMED, CNOFS, and ground observation networks will take data during this interval. Note that the list is not inclusive. Modelers can do real time prediction as well as do post-campaign analysis. Results can be submitted to the International Symposium on Solar Terrestrial Physics (ISSTP 2012), Fall AGU and the CAWSES Symposium 2013 in Nagoya. Dear Nat,
Yes, from Indian Centre for Space Physics, we would be interested to participate in the campaign. So far we have only VLF antennas (SOFTPAL and AWESOME) operating. In April we will have a couple of balloon flights with X-ray/Gamma-ray detectors especially if there are long flares. We get MaxMillennium predictions, but if there are more precise predictions of flares, may we know ahead of them? This is because balloon launched require ATC clearances and the there may be no flares in the time slot we apply for a week before. That is why if you know anyone who can do advance predictions of a precise time slot at least three days ahead of time, that would be great for us.
