MICHELSON DOPPLER IMAGER: MOST RECENT IMAGES
Continuum
FULL SUN IMAGE
This image shows the solar surface from the Michelson Doppler Imager
experiment on board the SOHO spacecraft. In the above picture it is possible to
make out sunspots and groups of sunspots (black regions), which are typically
about 1,000 degrees cooler than their surroundings. These sunspot regiosn are
associated with large concentrations of magnetic field and their coronal
counterparts, called active regions compare with the other images linked bel
ow). The number and size of sunspots are strongly related to the amount of activity
on the Sun.
