MICHELSON DOPPLER IMAGER: MOST RECENT IMAGES

Magnetic field

FULL SUN IMAGE

This image shows the distribution of magnetic field on the solar surface from the Michelson Doppler Imager experiment on board the SOHO spacecraft. Magnetic fields are of two types (or polarities). In the above pictue black denotes a negative polarity indicating a magnetic field which points into the Sun while white denotes a positive polarity indicating a magnetic field which points out of the Sun. Large concentrations of both polarities are found at the location of active regions and sunspots (compare with the other images linked below). The level of magnetic field is strongly related to the amount of activity on the Sun.
