Our
next stop takes us to the plains: A very flat
place. The race here is
a mix between European and native Colombians and since the
colonization of this region was a late one, the settlers came mainly
from the Andes.
This region is where most of our cattle comes from and is the home of
the Colombian cowboys.
They are proud people
that
value freedom and freedom of movement, and their contribution
during the independence war was immense. Their lives
revolve around
cattle and
horses and they hold tournaments
called Coleos regularly where they test their skill riding horses,
throwing the
lasso and
several activities related to cattle.
An
important
detail about this region is that
the
plains are not only located in Colombia but about 60% of them
are in
Venezuela. Something I like of the people from the plains is
that
they are, in my opinion, an example of brotherhood: Regardless of which
side of the frontier they were born, the people from the plains
consider themselves and each other "llaneros" wether they are Colombian
or Venezuelan; because of this, the folklore of the plains is shared
equally by Colombia and Venezuela.
