Solar Dynamo (Part 1)
Creating Toroidal Field out of Poloidal Field
- Starting from a poloidal
field the
differential rotation
bends the flux lines wrapping them around the sun. Most of
the shear
is concentrated in a region in the bottom of the convection zone called
the Tachocline.
- Once the field has become
stronger
enough it rises due to
buoyancy producing a pair of sunspots when it pierces the surface.
- To see a cartoon simulation
of how the
differential rotation
stretches a pre-existing poloidal field to create toroidal field and
the
latters subsequent buoyant rise, click here.
