Magnetic Buoyancy

Asociated to a magnetic field of strength B we have a magnetic pressure

\begin{displaymath}p_{mag}={B^2 \over 8\pi}\end{displaymath}

Then for pressure balance across the bounding surface of the flux tube we need

\begin{displaymath}p_{external}=p_{internal}+{B^2 \over 8\pi}\end{displaymath}

Having a lower pressure inside the flux tubes often means having less density inside the flux tube making it rise against gravity due to buoyancy.
