Velocity Fields in
the Sun & Stars
Differential Rotation
-
On the surface of the sun the
equatorial latitudes rotate
faster than the polar latitudes
-
Deeper layers in the sun rotate slower
than surface layer
near the equator and faster than surface layers in the poles.
Meridional Flow
-
A circulatory axisymmetric flow in the
meridional plane (r-theta
plane) of stars. For the Sun the flow is observed to be poleward at the
surface, sinks down at the poles and rises near the equator. From mass
concervation it follows that there is a equatorward counterflow
somewhere
in the interior.
