Hyalite Canyon

On Monday, July 3, I went to Hyalite Canyon with Will and Jessica to hike some trails headed to waterfalls. We ended up going to two trails - Grotto Falls and Palisade Falls - and to the Hyalite Reservoir which supplies some water to the Gallatin Valley. It was an easy walk and a really gorgeous day.

Some stacked rocks We saw a bunch of rock fields along both trails, and when we did, we stopped to stack some rocks, as you do.
Climbing a rock field At first, Will and I had thought that Jessica was climbing up the slope to collect rocks for our stacks, but instead...she kept going! Will climbed up after her, straight up the slope. I stayed down below and listened to the families walking past trying to dissuade their children from following Will and Jessica up the slope. Apparently, climbing down was much harder than climbing up.
A groundhog I saw this little groundhog by Palisade Falls. It sat there very calmly - it must have been used to visitors. Nearby, I spoke to some people who had gone to college in Kalamazoo.
Three friends at the base of a waterfall Here are Will, Jessica, and I before putting our heads into Palisade Falls...
Three friends at a waterfall ...And after we dunked our heads into the falls. It was really, really cold.
