This week I generalized last week's code to iterate over the 600-some explosive events I selected in the second week of this REU. I had it finished by Thursday morning. I also managed to watch some movies that Jake made of the observations to decide which data we needed to toss - it turned out we needed to toss most of the off-limb observations.
We also had a presentation on Friday, which I think I did pretty well on. I think I finally have a solid understanding of what an explosive event is and why we are studying them. Some of my colleagues said I was easy to understand, which was exactly my goal - why give a presentation that your peers cannot understand?
Despite all of the work that got done, I had Monday and Tuesday off as an Independence Day holiday. On Monday, I went to Hyalite Canyon (a state park, I think) with Will and Jessica, both in my REU program. Here is a post about that trip! At around midnight that night, we returned to Hyalite to look at the stars over the reservoir. Then, on Tuesday, most of our REU had a big Fourth of July potluck together. Will made some awesome curry and fried rice; I made black bean burgers that took a long time to make (so only a couple people ended up eating them). Later, I went and saw a community band that one of my REU friends is playing in at the Farmer's Market, and then saw a professional orchestra and a fireworks show at dusk at the Bozeman fairgrounds. All in all, it was a really nice extended holiday.
I also did some adventuring this weekend around Bozeman - we hiked the College M, a popular mountain trail on the outskirts of the city, on Sunday. Here is a post about that hike!
