Our
next stop is the Pacific coast: A place where the
jungle meet the ocean. This
region is
the second least populated of Colombia and most of the population is
black. This dates
from the times when
Colombia was a colony of Spain: In
those times the Spanish didn’t have any economic interest in
the
pacific and, on top of that, they considered the low lands unhealthy.
Because of this, African
people that could
escape slavery and could find their way into the pacific were able to
live in
peace and unmolested. This
can be seen
in their music which has the purest African influence of all Colombian
music.
