We would like to remind you that an online science meeting on "Particle Acceleration in Solar Flares and the Plasma Universe" will be held during November 15-19, 2021.
This meeting is open to everyone who is interested in particle energization in space, solar, and astrophysical plasma environments. It is driven by the recent development of a next generation solar X-ray/gamma-ray mission named “PhoENiX” (to be proposed to JAXA for a launch slot in early 2030s). While this mission is designed to study particle acceleration and heating in solar flares, we wish to have interdisciplinary discussions because we believe the scientific results of the PhoENiX mission will make a significant impact not only on solar physics but also on space physics and astrophysics. Examples of invited talks include “multi-wavelength observations of solar flares”, “roles of magnetic reconnection in high-energy phenomena in different plasma environments”, and “theory and simulations of particle acceleration and fundamental plasma processes”.

Article collection on first results of solar observations with ALMA
We would like to draw the attention of colleagues and ask for contributions
to an article collection on "The Sun Seen with the Atacama Large mm and
sub-mm Array (ALMA) - First Results", to be published in Frontiers in
Astronomy and Space Sciences/Frontiers in Stellar and Solar Physics as a
Research Topic.
With the roll-out of solar observing capabilities in 2016, the Atacama
Large mm and sub-mm Array (ALMA) has been regularly observing the Sun with
unprecedented spatial (~1") and temporal resolution (1s) in this wavelength
range. The goal of this Research Topic is to make an assessment of what we
have learned so far from ALMA observations of the Sun and thus put in
perspective ALMA’s contribution to our understanding of the physical
processes in the solar atmosphere while, at the same time, serve as a guide
to future work. An additional goal is to identify
observational/computational aspects that need to be addressed and thus help
to improve the quality and value of the observations. To this end, it will
include both review articles and original works.

The need for a high-performance solar radio telescope in the United
States has been recognized for many years. The FASR concept represents
such a telescope, one that provides high-resolution imaging over a broad
range of frequencies, sufficient to probe the solar atmosphere from the
mid-chromosphere to the mid-corona, with high time and spectral
resolution. EOVSA implemented many FASR design elements and, as such,
has served as a valuable pathfinder instrument, spectacularly validating
both the fundamental concept of time-resolved broadband imaging
spectroscopy and the science it enables. In the meantime, science and
technology have advanced and the need for full implementation of the
FASR concept has only grown more important
In anticipation of upcoming funding opportunities, this workshop is
being convened from 2021 Dec 1-3 to highlight progress in solar physics
over the past decade, and to take stock of the unique contributions
enabled by the current suite of new radio instruments, to refine the
science goals and requirements of a next-generation solar radio
facility. The workshop will provide a forum to discuss relevant new and
emerging technologies that will enable this new science. We invite
colleagues with an interest in solar physics and radio technology, and
from other fields that would stand to benefit, to help explore the
frontiers of science and technology that will guide updates and
refinements to the FASR concept.
The workshop will be virtual, hosted from the University of California
Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory (LOC: Pascal Saint-Hilaire, Milo
Buitrago-Casas, Jim McTiernan, Gelu Nita). The Scientific and Technical
Organizing Committee is composed of Marin Anderson (JPL), Tim Bastian
(NRAO), Bin Chen (NJIT), James Drake (UMD), Dale Gary (NJIT), Lindsay
