We analyze umbral area, magnetic field, and umbral intensity of the
sunspots during the rising phase of cycle 24. We do not find a significant
variation in either sunspot physical properties or distribution of sunspot

We present observations from SDO/HMI of a magnetic transient observed in
NOAA 11429 during the M7.9 flare on 13 March 2012. The observed transient
showed an impulsive rotation of the field vector in response to the
white-light flare.

Exploring the Lower Atmospheric Response to Flare Heating
Organised by R. Milligan & J. Allred
The bulk of a flare's energy released during the impulsive phase is often manifested as increased optical and UV/EUV emission emanating from lower solar atmosphere. Much can be learned about the energy release and transport processes by studying the response of the lower atmosphere to this injection of energy. For example, flow velocities, plasma densities, and emission measures can be deduced by careful analysis of the emitted radiation. This session will focus on how multi-wavelength observations of the response of the lower solar atmosphere, combined with advanced numerical simulations, can provide key insights into the processes of particle acceleration, plasma heating, energy transport, and wave propagation. Our discussion will be focused on, but not limited to, the following questions:
What can we learn about these processes by combining RHESSI observations with those from other instruments, both in space (SDO, STEREO, Hinode, IRIS,...) and on the ground (ROSA, IBIS, Big Bear,...)? Where in the atmosphere and by what mechanisms are the line and continuum transitions observed by these instruments produced? More specifically, where and how is white light emission produced during flares? How does the increased photospheric/chromospheric emission compare/contrast with that of stellar flares? Are current models able to reproduce the observations? And do the measured velocities, time profiles, and emission measures match those predicted by simulations?
We invite presentations of both observational and theoretical studies to this session.
