- 12/17/08: Welcome Milo Coleman Littenberg! (a.k.a. Baby X)

Got to the hospital on Wednesday morning and was hooked up to an IV, gave some blood, and answered a million questions... often the same ones more than once or even twice. It was so surreal being in the Labor and Delivery without being in labor. I had a few hard contractions while I was there as I had for weeks, but not labor.  :-(  I got really sad looking at the little newborn bed they have in there knowing that we wouldn't be using it, but then I made myself perk up and got excited that I'd be meeting my little one soon. I could tell that Tyson was really nervous as we had to hurry up and wait. I had to look past it or I would have become nervous too.

I think nurses are trained to talk very calmly. I can't count the number of times I was asked why I was having a repeat c-section and everyone's response was how sorry they were that the hospital didn't support VBACs and that "I" was the reason they were trying to get the procedure reinstated. Even the doctor came in and said that same thing again and expressed how he wished I had come in ready to push. I know they were trying to be nice and supportive, but it was making me really upset seeing as I really did not want the c-section. It was making me want to run out of there. A nurse told me afterward that I could have refused the c-section, but I would not have had any VBAC support. Oh well...

Then I was escorted over to the OR which was the same OR in which I had my previous emergency c/s and had been wheeled into bloody, half-naked, and screaming. I was immediately overtaken with a sense of panic which I had to sequester. But all of the nurses were extremely cheery. I was the 3rd c/s of the morning so all the births had put everyone in good spirits. They were all very calming and excited that we did not know the gender. Tyson was quite proud that it was his call to not know the gender. I was still very sure that it was a boy.

The lady performed the spinal tap which hurt like heck and took a long time to set.

When I finally got numb they began to prep me. So awkward for several people to be messing with you everywhere and chatting with you at the same time. I was so uncomfortable and wishing Tyson was in there. They were joking with the assisting doctor that he couldn't announce the gender because I requested that Tyson announce it first. It seemed that the doc had spoiled the surprise before.

Finally after forever, they put up the screen and Tyson came in. There was a lot more pushing and tugging and pulling than I remembered from before. Turns out that they had to use the vacuum to pull out the baby because of its size. Tyson wasn't even looking at me the whole time. I kept trying to catch his eyes but he was looking at something past me. He was rubbing my hair though which was comforting. The surgery was getting to him and he was trying not to pass out.

Then the moment came when the baby was out (at 11:21 am) and Tyson looked over to see the gender. I could hear the little one yelling.  :-)  Everyone was cheering. He nodded and then he came over to me and quietly said, "You made a son."  :-D + :'-)

The nurses commented on how big the baby boy was... 8 pounds 5 ounces and 20.25 inches at 1.5 weeks early! So exciting. I could see his feet just a-kicking in the baby bed and I noticed his long toes spread apart. His lungs had to be suctioned out before he was brought over to me to admire for a few moments. Tyson stood over by the baby while I was getting stitched up and then he and the baby left. I fell asleep on the table after they gave me some other anesthetic with morphine and woke up as I was being wheeled to recovery where I slept some more.

Tyson came in there with the baby and a lactation consultant. The LC was extremely pushy. I was still completely numb and had all sorts of things strapped to me, yet she was trying to make me nurse in extremely inconducive positions. I couldn't even sit up at all. Sheesh. It was making me mad and eventually I stopped because the baby was only taking 3 sucks at a time anyway and everyone was getting frustrated. He just wasn't ready considering how he was born. So I pulled him away from the LC and just held him and looked at how beautiful he was and smelled him and felt his hair with my cheek. And then they had to go back to the nursery for the baby to be bathed.

And that's how Milo Coleman entered the world. He is so perfect. We have a little boy!

I may...have been imagining it." ***

*** Most of the quotes on this site are attributed to Douglas Adams. If you haven't read Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, I highly recommend doing so for its brilliantly comedic dry wit. Magrathea!
