ned Kelvin Scheurer REU 2024

Weeks 3 - 4

Week 3

This week was focused on sorting/choosing data from XRT. First it was decided composite images are to be used. Filterd that data by removing saturated/missing pixels in the images. Selecting threshold values to identify the ARs came next. It was determined that a threshold of 40 and 50 proved to most accurately select the most active regions without picking up too much background noise. The next step was incorportaing HMI data so we projected the selected ARs onto HMI and calculated the total magnetic flux.

Week 4

Presentation week, prepared for presentation to be presented too the other solar REU students and advisers. Along with preparing for the presentation another filter was applied to help accuratley select ARs. We used the magentic flux calculated previously and set a limit that if a selected AR was below 100 gauss it was to be determined not an AR. This filter succesfully removed more background noise that was captured from only using a threshold previosuly. Friday quickley arrived and came the day to present my work done, you can find this presentation below.
