A number of RHESSI flares have been observed which also have good coverage with SoHO CDS, in a couple of cases close to the impulsive phase. This provides the possibility of measuring line shifts and performing limited spectroscopic diagnostics of the lower atmosphere early on in the flare. As well as doing the obvious thing of looking for signs of evaporation and testing for energy balance, it may also be possible to study the excitation mechanisms for UV and EUV lines under conditions of a high beam density.
