Do two guns really produce two different bullets?

 

We then took the data given to us by both programs and averaged them. We found the average hydrogen density for sigmoids and the average hydrogen density for filaments as well as the overall average for both sigmoids and filaments. We did this for all of the data, including velocity, temperature, alpha/proton ratio, DST, B magnitude, flux, current, theta and sine theta. With these averages we created truth tables to determine whether or not there was a statistical difference between the magnetic clouds originating from sigmoids and those originating from filaments. Unfortunately, our results are highly unreliable. We only had a sample of three magnetic clouds originating from filaments and six magnetic clouds occuring from sigmoids. Although this sample is too small to make assumptions from, it does give us some hints.

From this sample, we found that magnetic clouds originating from filaments had a higher density than those occuring from sigmoids. We also found that they produced magnetic storms with higher DSTs than magnetic clouds originating from sigmoids. Unfortunately, we cannot confidently state a difference between the average velocities, temperatures, currents, flux, field strengths and thetas of the magnetic clouds.
