MM#003 Major Flare Watch
by Max Millennium Chief Observer 11 Oct '26

11 Oct '26

Dear Collaborators, The target region, NOAA 14549 produced an M6.4 flare at 14:58 UT yesterday(10/10) right after the last message, but since then solar activity has come down to a low level. The largest event in the last 24 hours was a C4.8 flare at 17:45 UT yesterday from NOAA 14551 in the SouthEast quadrant, occurred during the decay phase of the M6.4 flare. Several other low-C class flares were reported from NOAA 14545 and a region newly rotated from the NorthEast limb. Although NOAA 14549 has not produced flares since the M6.4 event, a delta configuration in the leading sunspots are maintained. In the next 24 hours, NOAA 14549 should be monitored as the Major Flare Watch target. Flares of C to low-M class are expected with a slight chance of another event larger than M5. The position of the target in NOAA 14549 on 11-October-2026 at 16:00 UT is: N08W65 (862", 93"). Dear Collaborators, Solar activity has been at a low-to-moderate level since the last message. The largest event in the period was an M1.2 flare started at 13:56 UT today(10/10) from the target region, NOAA 14549. This region also produced a C7.9 flare at 4:35 UT today and several low-C class flares, while a C4.2 flare at 7:42 UT today was from behind the Northwest limb associated with an eruptive event from NOAA 14547. A group of leading sunspots of NOAA 14549 is showing a sign of decay but maintains a delta configuration and relative motion of sunspots. Today NOAA 14549 continues to be the target of the ongoing Major Flare Watch campaign. Additional C to low-M class flares are expected with a chance of an event larger than M5. The position of the target in NOAA 14549 on 10-October-2026 at 15:30 UT is: N08W52 (758", 76"). Dear Collaborators, Solar activity has been at a moderate level. After the M6.7 event yesterday (15:29 UT on 10/8), the target region, NOAA 14549 produced more than 10 low-to-mid C class flares. All of them are from its leading group of sunspots forming a delta configuration, while the group of trailing sunspots from which the M6.7 event was initiated stayed quiet becoming sparse. The largest event since the last message was an M1.3 flare reported at 13:55 UT today from NOAA 14547, which is currently under the NorthWest limb transit. The leading sunspots of NOAA 14549 are undergoing further flux emergence maintaining clear delta configurations. Today we will continue the Major Flare Watch campaign with NOAA 14549. The target will be on the leading sunspots, expecting additional C class activities with a chance of M class flare larger than M5. The position of the target in NOAA 14549 on 9-October-2026 at 16:00 UT is: N08W38 (596", 54"). See http://www.SolarMonitor.org and the newer version https://solmon.dias.ie for images and other information. Regards, Aki Takeda (Montana State University) --

Dear Collaborators, NOAA 14549 has just produced an M6.7 flare at 15:29 UT (10/8). The source region was in its trailing sunspots. At this moment, we will implement the Major Flare Watch campaign with NOAA 14549, on the area of trailing sunspots. The position of the target in NOAA 14549 on 8-October-2026 at 16:30 UT is: N11W19 (307", 98"). Dear MM fellow COs, especially folks at PMO, Yesterday, I received a note from Qiao that she is unable to do the MMCO duty further this week and the future weeks either. So I am going to cover the rest of this week. What is going on with Qiao or at PMO? I hope she is OK. FYI, currently she is assigned for two weeks (11/2-8, and 11/9-15). We need to find a way to cover these weeks. Regards, Aki ---

Dear Collaborators, Solar activity has been at a low-to-moderate level. The target region NOAA 14549 has produced several C class flares since the last message, with the largest being a C8.0 flare at 12:49 UT yesterday (10/7). The C8.0 event was produced by the trailing (Eastern) group of sunspots, but this area started to fall apart in the last 24 hours. On the other hand, the leading group of sunspots had new flux emergence added new sunspots of positive polarity, reinforcing a delta configuration. Today we will continue to observe NOAA 14549, at the area of leading sunspots, expecting C to low-M class activities. The position of the target in NOAA 14549 on 8-October-2026 at 15:30 UT is: N08W24 (399", 45"). See http://www.SolarMonitor.org and the newer version https://solmon.dias.ie for images and other information. Regards, Aki Takeda (Montana State University) --

Dear Collaborators, Solar activity has dropped to a low level. The target region NOAA 14549 remained at high productivity, producing the largest, a C3.6 at 14:59 UT yesterday. This region has retained a beta-gamma-delta/D-type sunspot group, showing signs of potential rotational shearing and additional flux emergence. Today, the target will continue on 14549. More C-class activity is expected, with an isolated low-M flare likely in the coming 24 hours. The position of NOAA 14549 on 7-Oct-2026 11:30 UT is: N10W03 (49", 60") See http://www.SolarMonitor.org for images and http://solar.physics.montana.edu/max_millennium/ops/observing.shtml for a description of the current Max Millennium Observing Plan. Dear Collaborators, Solar activity has grown to a moderate level. Most flares originated from the northeast quadrant, including yesterday’s target NOAA 14545 and a newly emerged region NOAA 14549. 14545 (N20W00, beta-gamma/D-type) produced an M1.1 at 18:36 UT yesterday. 14549 has been classified as a beta-gamma-delta/D-type sunspot group, with the emergence of significant magnetic fluxes. It produced 16 flares, with the largest being an M1.8 at 07:47 UT today. 14549 now becomes today’s target (with 14545 included). Further C-class activity is expected, with a chance for a low-M flare over the next 24 hours. The position of 14549 on 6-Oct-2026 11:30 UT is: N10E08 (-132", 60") See http://www.SolarMonitor.org for images and http://solar.physics.montana.edu/max_millennium/ops/observing.shtml for a description of the current Max Millennium Observing Plan. Dear Collaborators, The level of solar activity has remained low since the last message. The target region NOAA 14545 produced two high-B flares, with the largest being a B9.6 at 05:50 UT today. Its magnetic configuration has degraded to a beta/C-type. Today the target shall remain with 14545. More B-class flares are expected. The position of NOAA 14545 on 5-October-2026 at 07:30 UT is: N20E16 (-249", 228") See http://www.SolarMonitor.org and the newer version https://solmon.dias.ie for images and other information.
