Richard Schwartz died unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, 12 December. Although he had been sick for over a month, he was preparing to begin chemotherapy for Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma so his sudden passing was a great shock.
Richard got a BS from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1974 and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1984. After a couple of years at JPL, he came to Goddard and joined Ken Frost's X-ray group working on the solar flare data from the Hard X-ray Burst Spectrometer (HXRBS) on the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM). Since then he has been involved in the analysis of data from almost every space mission that has made high energy solar flare observations. His biggest role has been the scientist responsible for the RHESSI data analysis software. He was playing a similar role for the Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) on the Solar Orbiter. His main skill was the ability to combine scientific understanding with efficient computational techniques.
Richard's problem solving capabilities, prodigious memory, insightful but often acerbic wit, and imposing presence will be sorely missed by his many friends at Goddard and around the world in the international high-energy solar physics community.

SH008 - High-Energy Solar Investigations Through Next-Generation Remote Sensing: Spectroscopy, Imaging, and Beyond
Energetic processes on the Sun, including particle acceleration and plasma heating during flares and quiescence, emit signatures across the electromagnetic spectrum, from X-rays/gamma-rays, through UV/EUV, to infrared and radio. Recent measurements from numerous solar observatories including RHESSI; SDO; MinXSS; SphinX; the FOXSI, Hi-C, EUNIS, and EVE rockets; the GRIPS balloon; EOVSA; and many others; and from opportunistic observations by non-solar observatories such as NuSTAR, Fermi, ALMA, and VLA, have significantly advanced our understanding of these phenomena. They have also shown the pressing need for increasingly advanced high-resolution, high-sensitivity measurements across the entire spectrum, including polarimetry and especially imaging spectroscopy, to gain further insight into these high-energy processes.
This session invites presentations covering new instrumentation, enabling technology, missions, and concepts for next-generation solar remote sensing -- including spectroscopy, imaging, and beyond -- aimed at studying high-energy (hot and non-thermal) aspects of the Sun, and the science enabled by such new observations.

Dear GOES users,
The GOES workbench and object in SSWIDL now provide access to the new GOES-R XRS data (GOES 16, 17) as well as reprocessed GOES 13, 14, and 15 XRS data.
The 'GOES SSWIDL User Guide' has been updated to describe the new options. It also includes an explanation of those confusing scaling factors (if it's still not clear, please let me know!):

The short version is that there is a new archive designation - noaa - for the G16,17 and reprocessed G13,14,15 data. If you don't set any archive choice (noaa, sdac or yohkoh), the s/w will search for your requested times in all three archives, noaa first. GOES16 is now the default satellite to search for, but if your times aren't found, other satellite data will be searched (as before).
Currently the temperature and emission measure calculations in the GOES workbench are disallowed pending modifications to those routines to accommodate the new G16,17 transfer functions.
The EUV data from GOES 16,17 are not available yet, but NOAA promises they will be later this year. We'll add access to them when we can.

RHESSI Software users,
I’m forwarding this message that was sent to Solarnews last Friday just to make sure you see it. Anonymous FTP to NASA/GSFC will be blocked starting August 1. HTTPS access will continue to work.
The SolarSoft (SSW) update process will be changing August 1 – the new solution is being worked on, but is not quite ready.
If you use anonymous FTP (e.g. mirror) to retrieve RHESSI data files from GSFC, that will no longer work.

Important changes to SolarSoft
The SolarSoft library is distributed to the community through an anonymous FTP site at NASA/GSFC. Effective August 1st, NASA will be decommissioning unencrypted/anonymous FTP login, and so current scripts for installing and updating SolarSoft libraries (and databases) from the FTP server at GSFC will cease to function.
In preparation for this decommissioning, we are currently modifying the scripts to connect to a new server at https://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/solarsoft<https://www.nso.edu/solarnews/?nltr=Mzc7ODg4O2h0dHBzOi8vc29ob3d3dy5uYXNjb20…>. These modifications are not yet complete, but are expected to be working soon. We will keep the community informed of any progress.
Note that individual instrument directories are already accessible through, for example,

After more than 16 years of successful operations, the RHESSI spacecraft is now planned to be decommissioned on October 1 of this year. The on-board receiver has been slowly degrading since 2017, and commanding from the ground has become increasingly difficult to the point where we have not had a successful command since mid-July. We will continue to try to establish contact, but success is very unlikely. The spacecraft has no further scheduled transmissions and is programmed to automatically decommission itself on October 1.
Because of the communication difficulty, the detectors have not been turned back on following the sixth anneal, which started on April 12. Observations ended on April 11 at 01:50 UT and the last flare in the RHESSI catalog was a B5 on March 3. We have already started implementing the Mission Archive Plan as described in the latest RHESSI Senior Review Proposal
(http://hesperia.gsfc.nasa.gov/senior_review/2017/senior_review_proposal_201…).
For the next few years, RHESSI data products will continue to be accessible on the usual servers. In the future, the archive will be available through the Solar Data Analysis Center (SDAC).

It appears inevitable that the RHESSI spacecraft will be
decommissioned on October 1 of this year. The Max Millennium
program is supported by the RHESSI PI team, with NASA funding for
RHESSI operations, which will end on this date.
In the near term, the Max Millennium team will continue to carry out
all current functions: the Message of the Day, the Solar Physics
E-Print Archive, Max Millennium News, the MMscience, MMmotd,
and RHESSI_Data_Analysis mailing lists and archives, and all other
functions of the Max Millennium website at Montana State University:
<http://solar.physics.montana.edu/max_millennium/>.
The Max Millennium program, and the solar activity observing
community as a whole, has long benefitted from the generosity of the
volunteer Max Millennium Chief Observers. All current MM_COs have
expressed their desire to continue in that role: Shaun Bloomfield
(Northumbria University), Ying Li (Purple Mountain Observatory and
Montana State University), Bill Marquette (Hello Research), Aoife
McCloskey (Trinity College Dublin), and Ryan Milligan (University
of Glasgow).
The last two decades have resoundingly demonstrated the value of
multi-mission and multi-observatory coordination of solar activity
and space weather observations. Powerful new facilities have come on
line recently, and others will come in the next few years. Many of
them have high-resolution and limited field of view, which motivate
coordinated observation. We in the Max Millennium program will
solicit support for continuing such coordination in the future.
