Solar Investigations Through Next-Generation Spectroscopy: X-rays,
Gamma-rays, and EUV,² for the 2018 AGU Fall Meeting, to be held in
Washington, DC, 10 14 December 2018.
Spectrally resolved measurements in X-rays, gamma-rays, and EUV are critical
for advancing our understanding of energetic phenomena on the Sun, during
both flares and quiescence. To that end, this session invites presentations
covering new instrumentation, enabling technology, missions, and mission
concepts for next-generation X-ray, gamma-ray, and EUV solar spectroscopy,
including spatially-resolved measurements, and the science that would be
enabled by such new observations.

REMINDER: the deadline to register and submit abstracts is April 22, in just one week! I heartily encourage and invite you to attend this joint meeting.
Registration and abstract submission are NOW OPEN for the RHESSI 16th Workshop, co-hosted with the MinXSS 1st Workshop, to be held at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO, USA from June 19 to 24, 2017. The workshop website, https://rhessi16.boulder.swri.edu, includes registration and abstract information, as well as logistical (travel, hotels, etc.) information. Anyone with an interest in high-energy solar physics is invited to attend.
Registration and abstracts are due April 22. The registration fee of $325 includes the entire week of the workshop. There is no separate abstract fee. The Welcome Reception, Banquet dinner, and all morning and afternoon coffee breaks are free to registered attendees. Companion tickets are available.
Specially-priced room blocks are available at selected Boulder hotels until May 18.
The workshop format will be a blend of plenaries at the beginning and end, with various topical working group sessions in between, covering a range of high-energy solar physics topics including acceleration and transport of electrons and ions, the solar atmospheric response to energy release (including thermal plasma), multi-wavelength observations (EUV, radio, etc.), and pertinent theory. There will also be sessions on next steps in RHESSI imaging; the MinXSS CubeSat status and data access; new results from MinXSS-1 on flare thermal emission and quiescent soft X-ray emission; and a discussion of future instrumentation.
The final science program will be determined based on your contributed abstracts, so please submit a presentation and help guide the scientific goals of this event.

Dear RHESSI software users,
On Friday, March 3, we put some new RHESSI data accumulation software
online in the SSW hessi atest directory. For the most part, the changes
should be transparent to almost every user. The main changes are
* Since January 2014, electronic errors in the detectors moved some
events to energies up to 100-150 keV higher than their actual
energy. These events are now identified and removed. This effect was
getting worse with time. If you found higher energy emission than
expected, you should look again with this new software.
* Livetime accumulations at very small time bins (<512 binary
microseconds) were not being reported correctly. Fine time bins of
that order are generally only necessary for real spatial structure
on the order of a few arcseconds. If you were imaging sources far
from the spin axis with Grid 1 this might have affected your results.
* Accumulations across packet bunch boundaries were occasionally
problematic. (The software can't process the full data request at
once - it reads and processes groups or bunches of packets
sequentially to accomplish that.) The effect was minor - an
extremely short time interval of incorrect data at the boundary.
Packet boundaries are now handled correctly.

Dear Colleagues,
We cordially invite you to submit a contributed abstract for the Fall AGU 2016 meeting, session SH011, “New Observations and Recent Results for Solar X-ray Spectral Measurements and their Applications for Earth’s Atmosphere.” This session is inspired by recent and upcoming missions to measure the critically under-observed ~0.2-5 keV (~0.25-6 nm) spectral range, including the Miniature X-ray Solar Spectrometer (MinXSS) CubeSat; the session includes hard X-rays, and is not limited to just the soft X-ray range.
We invite presentations discussing spectrally-resolved solar X-ray measurements (including spectroscopy and imaging, both soft and hard X-rays), new techniques, and instrumentation; their implications for studies of plasma heating and particle acceleration in the flaring and quiescent corona; and their influence on Earth’s upper atmosphere. I am asking for your help in assessing the value of our Fermi Guest investigator project to make the Fermi GBM and LAT data readily available to the solar physics community. We are writing a follow-on proposal to continue this project, and it will be important to show how widely the Fermi solar observations are being used, and how useful the capabilities are that we are providing to access and analyze the data.

The RHESSI software team is happy to announce the formal inclusion of
regularized electron flux visibilities within the main branch of the
hessi software tree distributed through SSW. This gives a user the
capability of making electron flux maps over a series of energies by
setting only a minimum of parameters and using any of our visibility
imaging methods. It is also possible to use these methods to create
photon maps using these electron visibilities which will be more
smoothly varying than by making maps in the normal way from single
energy bands. As this is within our standard object software these
methods are available both from the Command Line and Graphical User
Interface (CLI and GUI). These are currently the only imaging methods
we use that constrain the map at a single energy by the data at multiple
energies.
