Dear Loopers,
I, Piet Martens, and Meredith Wills-Davey have just uploaded to the ArXiV a recently-accepted APJ paper on stray light in the TRACE telescope. We find, based on the Venus occultation data, that 43% of incident 171A light is scattered, so that the instrument-scattered "halo" around bright features is expected to contain 75% as much brightness as the features themselves.
This has a not inconsiderable effect on the inferred degree of localization of plasma in active region loops, and on the feasibility of DEM analysis with TRACE and similar instruments.

Ah yes. I'd already copied this from somewhere! It looks like a nice piece of work, but I noticed a misunderstanding of the history of the "fuzzy hot corona". This could already be seen in the visible forbidden lines - yellow being fuzzier than red or green. See the Billings book, which came long before Skylab.

Hmm...yes, possibly, was there really life before Skylab?! In fact I studied the coronal visible lines (1952 eclipse observations) for my PhD thesis many, many years ago!! Yellow is CaXV, seen only in very active active region, green is FeXIV and red is FeX. Green should be 'fuzzier' than red. Not sure if this was the case. I'll check it out. Helen

This paper makes the leap from modeling of individual loops to modeling of an entire active region. There are also some 3D movies online to visualize the results.
